My sister’s boyfriend suggested this Rommelhok comic was at least partly autobiographical. I can’t for the life of me imagine where he got that idea. For starters my wife (who actually does look somewhat like the wife in the comic) and I (who actually does look a little like the main character in the comic) have not, not now or at any other time in our lives, lived in the suburbs. Nor do we have spectacularly well paying yuppie jobs. And a garbage den full of Melanasian art? I would certainly love to have one of those but I don’t.

I do, however, own a wooden statue that looks suspiciously like the statue that comes to life on these Rommelhok pages:

My dad gave it to me when he returned from teaching at the university of Jayapura in the Indonesian half of New Guinea for a few weeks some time in the late 1980′s. Connoisseurs of touristy knock-offs of original ethnic art will recognize the unique patina (shoe polish): unlike authentic dark wood, this statue gets lighter with age.

And this much of the comic is, in fact, autobiographical: my wife hates it.

Ah … movement. Not exactly a mainstay of modern comics for grown ups, which is unfortunate as I really enjoy the action scenes in classic Franco-Belgian comics. While drawing this page, I had a scene in the back of my mind from Gaston LaGaffe, in which Gaston is chased around the Spirou offices by an irate Léon Prunelle:

Since the time I have available to work on the Rommelhok comic is limited I had to leave out the backgrounds. Drawing characters in motion is difficult and time consuming enough, especially if your drawing skills leave something to be desired.

“ww2 fighter plane”

And presto:

Artists working on, say, comic books about the ancient Romans would spend months locked up in libraries and archives collecting documentation that would help them draw whatever it was their script writers had thought up. These days, all you have to do is open your laptop.

While it may seem strange that a South Sea islander can take down an airplane with a bow and arrow, it’s not as unbelievable as you might think. A trained archer, which we can safely assume this fellow to be, can send off his arrows at a truly incredible speed. An arrow shot by such a trained archer can easily pierce steel armor, as the French learned to their dismay at the battle of Agincourt, where English peasant archers took out hundreds of heavy armed knights.

Of course the bows used by the English at Agincourt were of much higher quality than the one that this guy is using. They had rope instead of rattan twines and the tips of their arrows were made of steel, whereas the arrow shown here is entirely made out of wood: strong and sharp enough to pierce a fellow South Sea islander’s chest or a pig, but probably no match for the relatively heavy (for a WW2 airplane at least) armor of the depicted Bell P-39 Airacobra fighter plane.

I suggest we simply assume our friend, who my notes say goes by the name of Appieroessa by the way (bonus points if you can guess where that name comes from!), got really, really lucky.

One of my favorite online comics is the one created by Frenchman Boulet. Outside of France he is primarily known as the author of two volumes in the fantastic comic book series “Dungeon” (supervised by Lewis Trondheim and Joann Sfar). In France, however, he is a celebrity in his own right on account of his online diary comic (of which he occasionally posts translations into English here). In fact his fame is such that the French space agency CNES invited him to take part in a zero G flight and create a comic about his experience, which he did:

http://www.bouletcorp.com/blog/2012/04/14/

It’s not yet translated into English, unfortunately.

Since I took French in high school I managed to read it in the original (with the help of Google Translate) from which I learned that a zero G flight is where they take an airplane, fly it up really high and then send it in a nose dive to the ground. During that nose dive the people inside the plane experience weightlessness, which is useful for space astronauts undergoing training, scientists doing experiments and, in the case of Boulet, comic book authors goofing off. During a single zero G flight they do this about thirty times and every time they do the nose dive the pilots of the aircraft cover up the cockpit windows to prevent themselves from going into a panic when they see the earth approaching them at great speed.
